Namibia: Luderitz

We arrived in Luderitz at 9 am. We did not have a tour scheduled and were immediately mobbed by taxi drivers as soon as we were off the dock. Once we got through that, we found a cafe with wi-fi, had iced tea and non-alcoholic beer and tried to back up our iPhones.

I won’t go into detail, but I tried to get some Namibian dollars from an ATM. This did not end well, partly due to a sketchy character at the ATM. I’ll just say he didn’t get my card or password, but I no longer have my card either, which was eaten by the machine. Now when we need local currency we need a money changer, which is not always available.


Being Sunday, not much was happening in Luderitz. If you weren’t near the taxi drivers on the dock, it was almost eerily quiet. We walked around much of the town. It seemed more like Germany than Africa.






We found a gift shop with post cards and stamps which was open! We sat and wrote postcards, and moved on. 


We found a museum with an interesting Bushman exhibit! 







Before re-boarding the ship, we walked along the beach near the port. Lots of natural beauty.

  Wednesday, June 12, 2023, San Francisco, California We arrived back at our starting point at 9 am 6 months after we started our voyage. We’ve been to San Francisco a lot, so didn’t schedule a tour. Instead, we arranged to meet our travel buddy, Albert and Karen, another of the nice people Charlie had worked with for during his Fed/State job survey days. The weather started out warm, and we walked comfortably to a new attraction, Salesforce Park. Not an inspiring name, but a terrific garden walk amazingly placed above street level. A subway runs under it. Trees, plants and flowers were labeled. There were some sculptures to enhance the area, and places to sit and have coffee and snacks. San Francisco, CA and Ensenada, Mexico

  Tuesday, January 17, 2023 San Francisco, California & Ensenada, Mexico The Bon Voyage party started Saturday when we arrived in San Francisco, meeting up with  friends Jeff and Bernadette. They had mapped out a tiki bar tour starting at the Fairmont Hotel’s Tonga Room. It has a large pool with a dock for the band, and apparently rain, thunder, and lightning every hour. It was SRO, so we didn’t stay long enough to witness the storm. However, the storm outside was for real. We took a taxi to a hole-in-the-wall restaurant on Geary Street with good Thai food. From there, between showers, we walked to the Zombie Room, whose only sign was a neon coco palm over the door with skulls for coconuts. Exotic tropical drinks, and great tiki decor! Jill & Charlie Travels

December 12, 2022 Hello, Friends, Welcome to our travel blog site! We are embarking on a 180-day, round-the-world cruise. It's a huge, once-in-a-lifetime trip, and we're setting up this site to share pictures and descriptions as we go. The trip will start in San Francisco January 15, 2023. We will return to SF on July 13. We're taking the Oceania ship, Insignia, which is moderately sized cruise ship with about 650 passengers.  Currently our itinerary visits 99 ports in 41 countries. There have been quite a few adjustments and more changes to come for sure. With just a couple of exceptions these are places we've never been before.
