The ship arrived to Astoria about 10 am and it was raining. The free shuttle dropped us off in town. 


This is a charming town with many Victorian houses. We’ve been here many times, but always with a car. Here we were, just a two hour drive to home, but no way to get off the ship with our luggage. It was not possible to rent a one-way car home (we had looked into it—Enterprise was the only car rental company and the car had to be returned to Astoria). 


We tried to make a day out of it, but Charlie’s heart wasn’t into it, so after a lunch and a little shopping we went back to the ship for the final leg of the journey. Homesickness made this a tough day. 





Our last formal-ish dinner on the ship with friends.

  Tuesday, June 13, 2023, Okinawa (Naha), Japan We arrived at 11:30 am in Naha, which is in Okinawa Prefecture. Japan requires a face-to-face customs inspection, so we were given our passports and spent an hour and a half standing in line after getting off the ship to get through the customs.  Going through customs—our first stop in Japan With our landing cards pasted into our passports, we got on a tour bus and headed for Shuri Castle, which dates back to the 14th century. We were unfamiliar with Japan and decided a ship tour was a good idea for our first of 10 ports in Japan. Between 1429 and 1879, Shuri Castle was the palace of the Ryukyuan Kingdom. It’s burned down and been rebuilt several times. The entire area was pretty much obliterated in WWII when it was the headquarters for the Japanese army. Starting in 1992, reconstruction of the main courtyard was begun based on historical records, photographs, and memory. In 2000 it was designated as a World Heritage Site.  Unfortunately,

Jill & Charlie Travels

December 12, 2022 Hello, Friends, Welcome to our travel blog site! We are embarking on a 180-day, round-the-world cruise. It's a huge, once-in-a-lifetime trip, and we're setting up this site to share pictures and descriptions as we go. The trip will start in San Francisco January 15, 2023. We will return to SF on July 13. We're taking the Oceania ship, Insignia, which is moderately sized cruise ship with about 650 passengers.  Currently our itinerary visits 99 ports in 41 countries. There have been quite a few adjustments and more changes to come for sure. With just a couple of exceptions these are places we've never been before. Philippines: Salomague

Friday, June 9, 2023, Salomague, Philippines We arrived at the port of Salomangue at 9:30 am, an ancient port of call for Chinese merchants who traded with the people of the Philippines before the Spaniards arrived. Dancers and drummers greeted us on the dock.  Dancers at the dock By 10:30 am, we were on a bus heading south to Vigan City, one of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Ilicos region of the Philippines. Vigan is about an hour away, was established in the 16th century, and is considered the most intact example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia (or the world, depending on who you ask). The bus dropped us at the Vigan Cathedral (Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Paul), completed in 1800. It was damaged by a 2022 earthquake so we could not enter, but we started taking photos here.
